Brunei's
Hopes for BIMP EAGA
In
his titah at the BIMP-EAGA Leaders Meeting, His Majesty welcomed the
convening of the first ever BIMP-EAGA Leaders Meeting and noted its
achievements in various sectors such as transportation, telecommunication
services and tourism. The leaders were in Brunei to discuss BIMP-EAGA
activities and cooperation as well as the future direction of BIMP-EAGA.
His
Majesty stressed on the need to restore confidence on safety and security in
the area in order to attract more business and investment into the region.
In this regard, His Majesty welcomed the convening of a BIMP-EAGA Workshop
on Security to be led by the Philippines.
His
Majesty said that with its ample natural resources, the BIMP-EAGA needs to
come up with new, attractive and better initiatives than those of the ASEAN.
He also stated that the BIMP-EAGA region should focus on high-value added
agro-industry, natural resource-based manufacturing as well as opening
attractive tourist destinations within ASEAN
On
the four identified priority areas namely Infrastructure and Transportation;
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Development; Tourism and Natural
Resources Development, to revitalize business activities in the BIMP-EAGA
region, His Majesty urged ministers and officials to work towards deepening
and broadening these areas. He emphasized on the need to continue to
strengthen cooperation in the BIMP-EAGA region in order to accelerate the
social-economic development and alleviate the living standards of the people
in the region. With the strong
commitment for cooperation, His Majesty believed that BIMP-EAGA would create
an attractive, new and vibrant destination for trade, investment and tourism
